Remote yet easily accessible, this is a perfect year round retreat. Originally built in 1885, the log cabin has been fully restored and upgraded, including exposed logs, bronze counters and custom tile work. An addition to the cabin was built in 1970 and has also been fully remodeled. They are now a fully connected living space, yet each distinct in their own right. The historic cabin is about 500 square feet and has an open floor plan. There's a comfy queen size bed with all the sheets, pillows and blankets you'll need. The kitchen, although small, is fully stocked with cookware and everything you'll want but the food. There's a small fridge and freezer, stove and oven. In the winter, you'll find the cabin stocked with firewood and kindling, and there's also electric baseboard heat. Time and again guests say the bathroom is their favorite room, with an antique ash bucket converted into a sink, and unique details throughout. The new addition is like a 600 square feet tiny house, complete with a second fully stocked kitchen, bathroom (with heated tiled floors), master bedroom with a queen bed (also with sheets and blankets) and tv/dvd, mud room, with a washer and dryer and sleeping loft. The loft is 10'x5' with a plush carpet and double layers of carpet. Kids and adults enjoy it equally. Each area has a Flat Screen with HDMI and DVD player, with a shared DVD library for your enjoyment. You'll also find some board games and cards. Sheet, towels and blankets are included in the rental. A few things to consider: Bring an AWD/4WD vehicle. A front-wheel-drive Hyundai has no place on the Colorado Rockies in winter. If you can't bring your own four-wheeler, rent one. Hertz, Enterprise, and Avis have many great options available. As I said, it gets freezing up here, even inside the cabin. So bring plenty of warm clothes and a hardy mindest. At night, don't worry; we've outfitted each bedroom with a space heater and plenty of warm, cozy blankets. It snows tons up here. Be prepared to shovel some snow, run the snow thrower, or the unlikely possibility of being snowed-in a few hours. Like I mentioned before, help can be hours away, but while you wait for the county plows to clear the main road, start a warm fire, soak in the hot tub, and enjoy the magnificent winter views. LEADVILLE RACE EVENTS The Wolf Den is an excellent place for Leadville 100 race participants and their families. Book early, as these weekends go fast! Our driveway is located off of the Leadville Trail 100 MTB race course — a great spot for a cheer squad. The Leadville Trail 100 Run traces through the Twin Lakes aid station, just minutes away from the house. On race night, you can watch the glow of athletes’ headlamps as they travel up/down Hope Pass. It's pretty spectacular! DOG- AND FAMILY FRIENDLY In addition to welcoming owner-approved dogs with a $175 fee, the Wolf Den is also kid and baby friendly. One full-sized crib is located within an upstairs bedroom, and 2 portable cribs are also stored for guest use. Two booster seats may be used for dining, and children may access a supply of toys and books carefully curated by our son. Our mountain cabin is the perfect getaway for couples and families. Views are as good from INSIDE the cabin as they are OUTSIDE the cabin! Located high above Twin Lakes, our river rock and log-style Mountain House overlooks several of Colorado's 14'ers, including Mt. Elbert (the highest peak), Parry Peak and Mount Hope. A short walk up the hill behind us reveals Mount Massive. Our property is adjacent to two empty lots including national forest service land, giving the illusion of being the only house on the mountain. The house sleeps a maximum of 12, in beds. The upper floor offers a master bedroom with a king-sized bed and walk-in closet, a bedroom with bunk beds, a full bath, laundry room and loft area overlooking the lake/mountain view. The main floor includes two bedrooms, one with a queen-sized bed and one with a trundle, a full bath, kitchen and living room with floor-to-ceiling windows and a wood-burning fireplace. While we’ve elected to forego the cable, we do offer WI-FI and there is an entertainment center which includes a TV (no reception), movies, DVD, VCR, CD player. The walk-out basement boasts a finished game room with foosball, ping pong, air hockey, bubble hockey, and pop-a-shot basketball. A destination swing sits on 'The Point', a 10 minute stroll from the cabin, or drive there if you have already been hiking all day. There, one can take in a complete 360' sweep of the entire Upper Arkansas Valley and the Sawatch Mountain Range and Mosquito Range are front and center. The perfect place to enjoy a sunrise and/or sunset. The main trail-head to Mt. Elbert is a 5 minute drive from the back door. Use the cabin as a base-camp for a dozen other fourteener climbs close by. Halfmoon Valley and Creek are 20 minutes from the door with spectacular high alpine basins to explore. FISHING: For the anglers in your group, fishing at the Forebay and the Arkansas River are only three and five minute drives, respectively. Two queen beds (1 upstairs one down), a full bed (upstairs) and a queen pullout couch (downstairs) offer more than plenty of sleeping accommodations on 2 floors. There’s a wood stove and gas fireplace to keep you warm. The kitchen is equipped with stainless fridge, microwave, dishwasher and oven with full cupboards of dishes, silverware, pots and pans. The cabin is close to skiing, hiking/biking trails, ATV / Snowmobile trails and rentals close by, a zipline and more! Ski Cooper is less than 30 minutes away plus 8 other ski resorts including Aspen, Breckenridge, A-Basin, and Monarch are within 30 miles. In town, there’s a tubing hill and plenty of nightlife. Located approximately 10 miles south of Leadville and 30 minutes north of Buena Vista. It is within 30-40 minutes from Copper and Cooper Mountain ski resorts. For the avid Fisherman, it is just 10 minutes from the Arkansas River. The cabin is in Beaver Lake Estates, a gated community with stunning views that are unsurpassed! Our cabin is just that...a true Colorado Cabin! With approx. 1500 sq ft of living space and a large wrap-around deck to embrace all the scenery and wildlife that surrounds it. There are 3 Bedrooms (1 Master King, 2 Queens) and a pull out queen couch or mattress which allows for 6-8 sleeping comfortably. We also have a outdoor 'sleeping shed' that could sleep 2 brave souls that welcome the more 'outdoorsy' environment. We have 2 full bathrooms, one upstairs and one downstairs, that are very clean and bright.The updated kitchen offers sunny views of 3 of the highest 14er Peaks in Colorado. Granite countertops and updated cabinets grace the modern kitchen, giving it a cozy and friendly feel. The kitchen is well stocked : including dishes, silverware, pots/pans, toaster-oven, coffee machine, microwave, all the essentials needed for your stay. The farmhouse table can easily seat 6-8 people and is a great place for playing games and enjoying your group gatherings. Extra amenities include a Wood Stove in the living room (wood is provided), a BBQ grill on the deck, a large Fire pit and chairs outside, and a large driveway for plenty of parking (although it is very challenging in the Winter to go to parking at the top of driveway) Enjoy the view while relaxing in our 4-6 person Hot Tub on the front deck overlooking Mount Elbert! Our cabin has internet, satellite TV, DVD player, microwave, dishwasher, wood burning stove, washer/dryer, propane gas grill, stainless steel appliances, all kitchen wares, nice linens, etc. Note that Cell and phone service is NOT available in our cabin. We use the internet, Face-time, and texting to communicate with friends and family. This is sometimes 'sketchy' at different times of the day. Please know this before reserving , as this may be an inconvenience for you, ( but is a nice change to "getaway" for us). SUMMER/FALL: Beautiful hiking, cycling and mountain biking trails around Leadville, Collegiate Peaks and Turquoise and Twin Lakes , and the surrounding areas. Close-by 14er's for hiking, fly fishing on the Arkansas, horseback riding, lake fishing, river rafting, ATVing, etc. Aspen is only 40 miles away (when Independence Pass is open) and Summit County is only about 30 minutes away. Leadville has many sporting events and music and art festivals to enjoy. Note: No fishing in the two private lakes in Beaver Lakes due to HOA rules. Close by fishing out of the community in nearby Crystal Lake, Hayden Ponds, Twin Lakes, Turquoise Lake and more! Per HOA tenant rules : No ATVs/dirt bikes, open fires, fireworks, discharging firearms, dogs must be on leash. Specific rules in the Rental Agreement. WINTER: Great skiing- 10 miles from Ski Cooper, 25 miles from Copper Mountain, 40 miles from Vail. Over 9 ski areas within 40 miles! Leadville also has a great sledding hill, outdoor ice skating rink, aquatic center, dog sledding, Mineral Belt trail for cross country skiing and tons of snowshoe trails on Tennessee Pass and surrounding areas. The roads to the house and Beaver Lakes Estates are plowed and maintained in the winter. Our driveway is also plowed. We recommend an all-wheel drive car or SUV in the winter although the roads are plowed, they can be snow packed! We know you will enjoy our cabin as much as our family has over the years. This cabin is rented by the month. The price is extremely reasonable. About the same for a month as comparable weekly rentals. Plowing not included. I built this cabin with my sons just s few years ago in a8 beautiful aspen forest. The Beaver Lakes Estates' privately plowed road leads five miles off the highway to this quiet, sunny, mountain home. Sorry, closed due to the flu until April 30. (Updated March 20, 2020) This is a remote cabin during the winter and we are two miles from the nearest maintained road! Be prepared with your snow shoes or cross country skis for the last two miles from the parking area to the Retreat! The road to the Retreat is snow covered and is unpassable to wheeled vehicles. During winter, we are accessible only via Snowmobile, Snowshoe, or Cross Country Ski or Back Country Ski. The natural snow base during peak winter season is generally between 48 and 80 inches. You will need to pack in and out your provisions, similar to a ski touring vacation. We currently have a natural snow base of about 40 inches. The Retreat is a modern log home located in the back country on Long & Derry hill overlooking Empire Gulch. Near Leadville, Colorado, the cabin sleeps four comfortably and is very homey. The rates listed are for double occupancy. Add $25 per additional person per night. The Retreat is at an attitude of 11,150 feet above sea level and is located near Leadville, Colorado, North America's highest incorporate city at 10,152 feet above sea level. We are the perfect backcountry getaway for outdoor enthusiasts and for high altitude training. Enjoy hiking, running, backpacking, cycling, snow shoe, cross country ski, back country ski, snowmobiling and much more just outside your door. In general, we are ONLY accessible from June thru November by four wheel or all wheel drive vehicles with good tires depending on snow accumulation. The Retreat is located seven miles south of Leadville, within the Paddock State Wildlife Area which is about 1300 acres and home to several species of large animals including bear, mountain lion, moose, elk, deer and an occasional Golden Eagle. There are many miles of deserted mining, forestry and county roads both for the extreme athlete and the snowmobile or ATV enthusiast. The area is very popular during summer with mountain bikers and ultra marathon runners. The highest recorded summer temperature is 86 degrees. During snow season, many miles of trails are groomed for cross country skiing or snowmobile riding. No matter what time of year, this is a beautiful place. The area is filled with old growth forest and a few scars on the land, the only remaining evidence of the once popular mining economy. The cabin is nestled amongst 14,000 foot peaks including the two tallest mountains in Colorado, Mt. Elbert and Mt. Massive. Our southern exposure gives us sunny afternoons and a view of Mt. Hope. The area is very quiet. The few sounds you may hear are passing ATV’s and snowmobiles or dog sled teams. The property includes both mature pine and aspen forest that turn a special gold for a few days each fall. The cabin features electricity via a solar array. You should interpret this to mean that while we do have electricity, it is in limited supply since the cabin is completely off grid. This means no high wattage appliances are supported. (No hair dryers, coffee makers, electric blankets, heating devices, etc.) We do provide a stove top percolator for coffee service. We provide Hulu, Net Flix and Amazon Prime as well as Hughes Net satellite internet service and WiFi. The kitchen features a refrigerator, gas stove and microwave oven and is outfitted with most common cooking utensils. Linens for the bathroom, beds and kitchen are also provided. We also provide drinking water thru a reverse osmosis unit so that our guests are not burdened with the weight of water! The cabin is heated ONLY by a wood stove and wood is supplied for your stay. We do run a generator on the property about four hours a day to charge the solar batteries and to heat water. Altitude sickness is not uncommon for persons from lower elevations. Hydration is generally key to preventing or reducing symptoms. Due to geographic location, please be aware: “ALPINE CONDITIONS EXIST ALL YEAR LONG”! During snow season, hazards exist under the snow. Slippery, uneven surfaces are the norm year round. Please arrive prepared with proper outdoor foot wear and trail gear as the Retreat is an adventure into the wilderness as much as a comfortable home.
